“Maine doesn’t show off. It’s not loud about its beauty. It’s in the quiet things — the trees after a snow, the kind of silence that settles in your chest, the way a cabin light looks against the woods. You feel it more than you see it.” - Susan-Jo Dixon
Inside
My World
Welcome to my corner of the world. I grew up in the deep woods of Maine, where the roads curve like secrets and the seasons change the very shape of the sky. There’s a quiet out there you can’t really explain to someone who hasn’t lived it…pine-scented, snow-heavy, and alive in a way that gets under your skin and stays. My childhood was built around long gravel roads, campfires by the lake, and the constant hum of wind moving through the trees. That sound still settles me more than anything else.
Those woods shaped the way I see people and the way I write them. In Maine, the coast and the interior are two different worlds, but both carry the same heartbeat: resilience. Folks grow tough out here, not because they want to be, but because the landscape teaches them how. You learn to shovel your own path, patch your own roof, and navigate storms—literal and otherwise. You learn to hold on tight to the people who matter.
It’s no surprise that my stories always drift back to Maine, whether I’m writing about a fishing village on the rocky coast or a hidden cabin miles from the nearest paved road. The small towns, the quiet grit, the beauty and isolation…those pieces live in me. They seep into my characters, their trauma, their healing, and the kind of love they fight for. Maine has a way of grounding people while also testing them, and I try to bring that same balance of tenderness and toughness into every book I write.
So when you read my stories and find yourself in the middle of a snowstorm, on a dock at low tide, or deep in a forest where the only light comes from a cabin window… that’s my home. That’s where I come from. And I hope, for a little while, it feels like a place you’d like to stay.
